Below are pictures of Dwayne working with this mare. She had been haltered in the chute and then turned out into the corraled in area where we were taking pictures. Although she is supposed to be halterbroke, she didn't particularly act like it when she came out of the chute with a bang! Dwayne is very gentle, he had no gloves on and was using a nasty old nylon rope as a lead rope. In about 5 minutes he had her settled down and was able to approach and take the halter off.
Bang, out she came with gusto, surprising all of us!
Dwayne asking her to face him.
She wanted to throw the lead rope over her head, making it ineffective.
Dwayne just dances with her, not pulling, but not letting go of the lead rope either.
Finally, he gets it where he needs it, and she faces him.
And trys to escape again.
Notice Dwaynes hands on the rope. He does not wrap it around his hand, and has a loose grip on the rope.
Now he works his way up the lead rope.
Talking quietly to the mare, note her ear and eye on him.
Dwayne keeps himself safe, holding his extra lead line loped in his hand so that he will not trip over it, or get it wrapped around his hand. He also keeps himself well out of striking range, and gives this mare room to bolt if she decided to.
He introduces himself. Note his hand, palm down for her to sniff.
She decided to leave, to go closer to the rest of her herd, on the other side of the corral we were working in.
Hello Again, this time she sniffs his hand and seems to remember that she might be a tame horse after all.
Dwayne asks permission to take her halter off....
Oh, she says... why didn't you tell me that's what you wanted in the first place!
